San Francisco's affordable housing crisis gets most of the headlines these days, but that doesn't mean cheap places to live are abundant elsewhere in the Bay Area. A recent survey of craiglist For Rent listings turned up some eye catching data.
Out of 2,500 total listings, fewer than 100 are priced below $1,600, with 90% of listings asking more than $2,000 per month. Using the benchmark of rent not being more than 1/3 of your annual income, that means nine out of every 10 listings are not affordable to anyone making less than $72,000 per year.
Sure, plenty of people make that in Silicon Valley; San Mateo County has a median income well north of $100,000. But more people don't make that much, so living close to the region's primary job center is an option. It's no wonder than that we hear stories of local firemen and police officers commuting from the central valley.
